ENSEMBLE NORDLYS

Since the critically acclaimed début in 1997, Ensemble Nordlys (Northern Lights) has given numerous concerts in Denmark and abroad, as well as having been regularly featured in the Danish Radio. Ensemble Nordlys har toured in many countries including Vietnam, Iceland, Poland, and Germany with concerts in the Reykjavík Museum of Art, Krakow Philharmonic Hall, Chopin Palace in Warsaw, and Otto Braun Saal in Berlin among others. Last year Ensemble Nordlys was selected to represent Denmark at the international EU Music Festival in the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall. In 2001 the quartet released its first CD "Nordlys", which was nominated for a Grammy as best chamber music recording. As the only chamber ensemble, Ensemble Nordlys was picked to take part in the official worldwide celebration of the 200th anniversary of H.C. Andersen in 2005.

The ensemble consists of violin, violoncello, piano and clarinet - the classical piano trio enriched with the clarinet, which was one of Mozart's favourite instruments. The repertoire is very broad and extends from the baroque over the Vienna classics and the romantic period up to the music of our time. Ensemble Nordlys has given the first performance of some 35 works and has worked closely with several acclaimed composers. Composers such as Hans Werner Henze and Gunther Schuller have been supervising the quartet.

The ensemble’s name "Nordlys" was a natural choice as the quartet is based in Scandinavia and has devoted much time to the performance of Nordic music. ""Ensemble of the Future" was added in the hope that the idea on which Ensemble Nordlys is founde will influence the future:

- that musicians and composers will inspire each other and work closely together to   create new works.

- that musicians will explore both contemporary and long established works in order   to broaden the means of musical expression.
